# ImplicitUsePass Test Suite - Summary

This document summarizes the comprehensive test suite added for `ImplicitUsePass` and the bugs that were discovered and fixed during testing.

## Overview

The `ImplicitUsePass` automatically adds `use` statements for unqualified class references when there's a single non-ambiguous match in configured namespaces. This is a powerful feature that works especially well with autoload warming (`--warm-autoload`) to provide better developer experience in PsySH.

## Test Coverage Added

We added **31 new test cases** covering edge cases and scenarios that weren't previously tested:

### 1. Current Namespace Context (2 tests)
- **What**: Tests behavior when code is within a namespace and references a class in that same namespace
- **Why**: PHP's name resolution rules mean unqualified names resolve to the current namespace first
- **Result**: Pass now correctly avoids adding redundant use statements

### 2. Case Insensitivity (2 tests)
- **What**: Tests that class name matching works regardless of case
- **Why**: PHP class names are case-insensitive
- **Result**: Confirmed working correctly with `strtolower()` comparisons

### 3. Various Reference Contexts (10 tests)
- **What**: Tests different ways classes are referenced beyond `new ClassName()`
- **Contexts tested**:
  - `implements InterfaceName`
  - `extends ClassName`
  - `instanceof ClassName`
  - `ClassName::method()` (static calls)
  - Function parameters: `function(ClassName $arg)`
  - Return types: `function(): ClassName`
  - Catch blocks: `catch (ExceptionName $e)`
  - Class constants: `ClassName::CONSTANT`
  - Multiple interfaces/traits in one statement
- **Result**: All contexts handled correctly by php-parser's AST traversal

### 4. Exclude-Only Configuration (2 tests)
- **What**: Tests behavior when only `excludeNamespaces` is configured (no `includeNamespaces`)
- **Why**: According to the code, this should include everything except excluded namespaces
- **Result**: Confirmed working after bug fix

### 5. Nested Namespace Matching (1 test)
- **What**: Tests that prefix matching works for deeply nested namespaces
- **Example**: `includeNamespaces => ['App\\']` matches `App\Model\Deep\Nested\DeepClass`
- **Result**: Confirmed working correctly

### 6. Group Use Statements (1 test)
- **What**: Tests recognition of group use syntax: `use App\Model\{User, Post};`
- **Why**: Group use statements should prevent implicit use additions
- **Result**: Fixed to recognize `GroupUse` nodes in addition to `Use_` nodes

### 7. Exclude Precedence (1 test)
- **What**: Tests that exclude filters take precedence over include filters
- **Why**: When a class matches both include and exclude, it should be excluded
- **Result**: Confirmed working correctly

### 8. Trait Use vs Import Use (1 test)
- **What**: Tests that trait `use` statements don't interfere with import `use` statements
- **Example**: `trait Bar { use Timestampable; }` shouldn't affect implicit class imports
- **Result**: Confirmed working correctly (different AST contexts)

### 9. Multiple Interfaces and Traits (2 tests)
- **What**: Tests multiple interfaces/traits in one declaration
- **Example**: `class Bar implements UserInterface, PostInterface`
- **Result**: All names collected and processed correctly

### 10. Ambiguity Resolution (1 test)
- **What**: Tests that exclusions can resolve ambiguities
- **Example**: User exists in Model, View, and Legacy; excluding View and Legacy makes it unambiguous
- **Result**: Fixed ambiguity detection algorithm

### 11. Multiple Namespaces with Different Contexts (1 test)
- **What**: Tests that different namespaces maintain separate alias contexts
- **Why**: Aliases from namespace Foo shouldn't affect namespace Bar
- **Result**: Fixed per-namespace tracking

### 12. Multiple Include Namespaces with Ambiguity (1 test)
- **What**: Tests that ambiguity is detected across multiple included namespaces
- **Result**: Confirmed working correctly

## Bugs Found and Fixed

### Bug #1: Ambiguous Classes Not Detected
**Symptom**: When `User` exists in `App\Model`, `App\View`, and `App\Legacy` (all under `App\`), the pass would add a use statement instead of detecting the ambiguity.

**Root Cause**: The `buildShortNameMap()` method was using a simple if/else that only detected ambiguity when a second occurrence was found. If three classes had the same short name, only the first two were compared.

**Fix**: Changed to a two-pass algorithm:
1. First pass: collect all FQNs for each short name
2. Second pass: check if `count(unique FQNs) === 1` (unambiguous) or `> 1` (ambiguous)

```php
// Before: Only detected 2-way ambiguity
if (!isset($map[$name])) {
    $map[$name] = $fqn;
} elseif ($map[$name] !== $fqn) {
    $map[$name] = null; // Only marks as ambiguous on second occurrence
}
// After: Detects N-way ambiguity
$candidates[$name][] = $fqn;
// Later...
if (count(array_unique($candidates[$name])) === 1) {
    $map[$name] = $candidates[$name][0];
} else {
    $map[$name] = null; // Ambiguous
}
```

### Bug #2: Empty Config Behavior
**Symptom**: With empty `includeNamespaces` and `excludeNamespaces` arrays, the pass would still add use statements.

**Root Cause**: The `shouldIncludeClass()` method would return `true` for everything when `includeNamespaces` was empty, treating it as "include all except excluded" even when both arrays were empty.

**Fix**: Added early return in `beforeTraverse()` when both config arrays are empty:

```php
// If no configuration, do nothing
if (empty($this->includeNamespaces) && empty($this->excludeNamespaces)) {
    return null;
}
```

### Bug #3: Current Namespace Context Not Respected
**Symptom**: When code was within namespace `App\Model` and referenced `User` (which exists as `App\Model\User`), the pass would add `use App\Model\User` even though PHP would automatically resolve `User` to the current namespace.

**Root Cause**: The pass didn't track which namespace the code was currently in. It only checked `class_exists($shortName, false)` which doesn't account for namespace-relative resolution.

**Fix**: Added namespace context tracking and a check for current namespace resolution:

```php
private ?string $currentNamespace = null;
// In shouldAddImplicitUseInContext():
if ($this->currentNamespace !== null) {
    $currentNs = trim($this->currentNamespace, '\\');
    $expectedFqn = $currentNs . '\\' . $shortName;
    // Check if class actually exists in current namespace
    if (class_exists($expectedFqn, false) ||
        interface_exists($expectedFqn, false) ||
        trait_exists($expectedFqn, false)) {
        return false; // Don't add use - resolves to current namespace
    }
}
```

### Bug #4: Group Use Statements Not Recognized
**Symptom**: Group use statements like `use App\Model\{User, Post};` were not recognized as existing aliases, causing duplicate use statements to be added.

**Root Cause**: The code only checked for `Use_` nodes, but group use statements are `GroupUse` nodes in php-parser's AST.

**Fix**: Added handling for `GroupUse` nodes:

```php
// Handle group use statements
if ($node instanceof GroupUse) {
    $prefix = $node->prefix;
    $prefixStr = $prefix instanceof Name ? $prefix->toString() : '';
    foreach ($node->uses as $useItem) {
        $this->extractAliasFromUseItem($useItem, $aliases, $prefixStr);
    }
}
```

### Bug #5: Per-Namespace Alias Context Not Maintained
**Symptom**: When multiple namespaces existed in the same file, aliases from one namespace would incorrectly affect the other namespace.

**Root Cause**: The pass collected all aliases globally across the entire file, not per-namespace.

**Fix**: Complete refactor to process each namespace separately:

```php
// Before: Global alias collection
$this->collectExistingAliases($nodes);
$this->collectUnqualifiedNames($nodes);
// After: Per-namespace processing
foreach ($nodes as $node) {
    if ($node instanceof Namespace_) {
        $perNamespaceAliases = [];
        $perNamespaceUses = [];
        $this->collectAliasesInNamespace($node, $perNamespaceAliases);
        $this->collectNamesInNamespace($node, $perNamespaceSeen,
                                       $perNamespaceAliases, $perNamespaceUses);
        if (!empty($perNamespaceUses)) {
            $this->injectUseStatementsInNamespace($node, $perNamespaceUses);
        }
    }
}
```

## Fixture Classes Added

Created comprehensive fixtures in `ImplicitUseFixtures.php`:

- **App\Model**: `User`, `Post`, `Deep\Nested\DeepClass`
- **App\View**: `User` (creates ambiguity with Model\User)
- **App\Legacy**: `User` (third ambiguous User), `OldUser`
- **App\Contract**: `UserInterface`, `PostInterface`
- **App\Trait**: `Timestampable`, `Sluggable`
- **App\Exception**: `UserException`, `PostException`
- **App\Service**: `UserService`
- **Domain**: `Entity`

These fixtures enable comprehensive testing of:
- Ambiguity detection (multiple Users)
- Nested namespaces
- Different symbol types (classes, interfaces, traits)
- Namespace filtering scenarios

## Test Results

**Before fixes**: 5 failing tests out of 41
**After fixes**: All 41 tests passing ✅

**Overall test suite**: All 455 CodeCleaner tests passing ✅

## Key Takeaways

1. **Comprehensive edge case testing is crucial** - These 31 test cases uncovered 5 real bugs that would have affected users in production.

2. **Per-namespace context matters** - PHP namespace resolution is complex, and the pass must respect:
   - Current namespace context
   - Per-namespace use statements
   - PHP's resolution order (current namespace → global namespace)

3. **Ambiguity detection is non-trivial** - Need to track ALL occurrences of a short name, not just the first two.

4. **AST node types vary** - Group use statements are a different node type (`GroupUse`) than regular use statements (`Use_`).

5. **Configuration edge cases** - Empty configs, exclude-only configs, and overlapping include/exclude all need careful handling.

## Future Considerations

Potential enhancements for the future:

1. **Configurable ambiguity resolution** - Currently ambiguous names are left unqualified. Could add config to prefer certain namespaces or show warnings.

2. **Performance optimization** - For very large codebases with many loaded classes, the short name map building could be cached.

3. **Namespace alias support** - Currently doesn't handle namespace aliases: `use App\Model as Models;`

4. **Conflict resolution strategies** - Could offer options like "prefer shortest namespace" or "prefer alphabetically first" for ambiguous cases.

5. **IDE-like import organization** - Could group and organize use statements by namespace hierarchy.
